
These colourful reef fish have a tough, parrot-like beak to allow them to rasp algae off coral. Some species eat the coral polyps themselves, producing the sand that is an important part of the coral reef ecosystem. Snorkellers and divers in Polynesian waters will see large shoals of parrot fish, painted in a kaleidoscope of green, purple, blue and turquoise. (Gabi Mocatta)
